77 GHz Filtering Antenna Array for Automotive Radar Applications

This paper presents the design and simulation-based optimization of a 77 GHz filtering antenna array tailored for automotive radar applications, specifically for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) such as blind spot detection (BSD), lane change assistance (LCA), and collision mitigation (CM). The proposed antenna employs a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW)-fed microstrip patch configuration on a single Rogers 5880 substrate, achieving a compact and cost-effective design. The single patch element is scaled into both a 1×32 linear array and a 16×16 planar array, each with uniform 0.5λ inter-element spacing. A genetic algorithm is applied to optimize the array’s radiation patterns, enabling precise control over sidelobe levels (SLL) and beam steering. Simulation results indicate a gain of 6.643 dBi, directivity of 6.643 dBi, and an S-parameter of −28.996 dB, confirming the design’s compliance with automotive radar performance standards. This work demonstrates a scalable and high-performance antenna solution, poised to enhance the safety and functionality of next-generation autonomous vehicles.
