Understanding the Cognitive and Emotional Impact of Extended Screen Engagement

The discourse surrounding the purported detrimental effects of digital-screen engagement on cognitive and emotional well-being pervades public discourse, political narratives, and scientific discussions. However, the current psychological evidence challenges the certainty echoed in various quarters. This research critically evaluates the prevailing notion by scrutinizing the existing body of psychological evidence. Contrary to popular beliefs, a nuanced examination reveals a lack of clear-cut evidence linking screen time to diminished mental health. Most psychological findings are derived from single-type persona or cluster exploratory studies that heavily depend on widely used yet inaccurate selfreport measures of digital-screen engagement. Around 74.8 % of participants have been affected by excessive screening and their sleep quality. Several of the participants believe that excessive hours spent in front of the screen have affected their physical well-being and reported negative effects on their mental health. This study emphasizes the need for a more rigorous and diversified representative approach to investigating the impact of screen time on cognition and mental health. By challenging prevailing assumptions, this research aims to contribute to a more informed and nuanced understanding of the complex relationship between digital-screen engagement and cognitive and emotional well-being.
