Repair Options for PV Modules: Technical Feasibility

Extending the lifetime of photovoltaic (PV) modules is a key challenge as PV becomes increasingly important as a renewable energy source. One way to extend the lifetime is to introduce new technologies, but repairing and reusing existing modules is also promising. Damage to the backsheet is one of the most common causes of PV module failures and can potentially be repaired. An ongoing research project is developing environmentally friendly coating solutions for repairing backsheets. Tests show that silicone coatings are particularly effective because they are cost-effective, environmentally friendly and easy to apply. PU coatings still require optimization to improve their durability. Long-term tests and results show that damaged backsheets can be protected by additional protective films and thus, the operational lifetime of these modules can be drastically increased.
