There are varying demands of complex applications in the enterprise era, which need to be fulfilled by workflow engines. This paper presents the taxonomy of workflow engines and proposes a structured approach to analyze their strengths and weaknesses, enabling organizations to identify the most effective solution for their automation requirements. The intent of this paper is also to identify core capabilities required for the effective automation of tasks using workflow engines.
