A Patented Non-Contact Method for Measuring Tread Deformation at the Tire-Road Interface

Traditionally, tire-road interaction forces have been estimated indirectly using vehicle dynamics data such as chassis acceleration, yaw rate, or suspension deflection, which limits measurement accuracy and reliability. Recent advances in the "intelligent tire" concept, incorporating integrated sensors and on-tire data processing, have allowed for more direct force estimations. However, these solutions still face critical challenges, including optimal sensor selection, data accuracy, and interpretation complexity. The article introduces a patented non-contact optical method (Patent CZ310096B6) designed to measure tire tread deformation directly at the tire-road contact interface from within the tire itself. This innovative approach combines internal illumination via a line laser diode with real-time optical sensing, significantly improving data precision and eliminating common issues associated with external sensor placement and environmental interference. Experimental results confirm the system’s ability to capture detailed dynamic deformation profiles of the tire tread under realistic operating conditions. The method provides precise, real-time spatial deformation data, enabling a deeper understanding of tire-road interactions and offering significant potential for enhancing tire design, vehicle dynamics, and autonomous driving systems. This approach thus represents a considerable advancement in intelligent tire technology, facilitating more accurate diagnostics and safer automotive solutions.
