The Development of Artificial Learning Media for Inquiry-Based Learning to Enhance Analytical Thinking Skills and Basic Microsoft Word Usage in Schools with Limited Digital Technology Resources

Computational science focuses on computational thinking. The CS Unplugged teaching approach is used to teach computer science principles without using computers. However, its limitation is the lack of hands-on experience and software development tools, which results in students lacking basic skills in using essential tools such as Microsoft software. This research aims to develop an inquiry-based learning model and instructional media that enhance the basic use of Microsoft Word, to create instructional media for using Microsoft Word, and to improve analytical thinking skills through the developed approach for upper elementary students in schools with limited digital technology resources. The study employed a five-step inquiry-based learning process: Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation. The instructional media feature a game-based learning approach using jigsaw block puzzles, representing various tool functions, while simulating the Microsoft Word interface. Participants included 24 sixth-grade students from a high school, Thailand. The findings revealed that all students improved their analytical thinking skills, including interpretation, analysis, and reasoning, and students successfully acquired basic Microsoft Word skills after using the instructional materials and the learning model. This research serves as a model for educators to develop instructional materials that compensate for digital technology limitations while fostering students’ analytical thinking skills.
