Modelling of the impact of silver nanoparticles morphology on the electromagnetic field enhancement

Silver island film is known for yielding strong and broadband enhancement of the electromagnetic field in both visible and near infrared spectral ranges. Due to such property this material is applied in sensorics and photonics to improve the optical response of the emitters. We present numerical finite domain-time domain modelling studies of the impact of a single silver island morphology on the resulting field enhancement. Moreover, we investigate the impact of spatial organization of silver islands into a periodic structure. Our studies are focused on the near infrared response of these materials, which is of particular importance for applications in optoelectronics and nanophotonics, as it matches the operating range of the rare earths-doped materials.
