A Critical Review of Fault-Tolerant Control for Multiphase PMSM Drive Systems

Multiphase permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) exhibit excellent fault tolerance capabilities, making them promising candidates to replace three-phase motors in reliability-critical applications. To advance research on fault-tolerant control and expedite the application of multiphase PMSMs, this article reviews key aspects of fault-tolerant control, including robust strategies for pre-fault and post-fault scenarios, fault diagnosis methods, phase short-circuit fault-tolerant control, phase open-circuit fault-tolerant control, and inverter switch open-circuit fault-tolerant control. Beyond summarizing recent progress and challenges in fault-tolerant control, this article further proposes a future technical roadmap for multiphase PMSMs.
