A Bidirectional Converter with High Voltage Gain Based on Isolated H-Bridge and Active Bipolar Cockroft-Walton Voltage Multiplier

This paper proposes a new DC-DC converter for applications which require bidirectional operation and high voltage conversion capability. The multistage converter consists of a H-bridge on the primary side, medium frequency transformer in the middle and bipolar Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier on the secondary side whose switches are replaced with active power semiconductors. The theory of operation and converter modular and scalability features are discussed. Design and analysis are performed to properly size the power components. Circuit simulation is also performed to validate the design procedure and demonstrate the bidirectional capability of the converter. Results show good agreement with the theoretical calculations.
