Synergies and Trade-offs between Resilience and Sustainability in Supply Chain Management: An Evaluation Framework

This article explores the complex relationships between resilience and sustainability in supply chain management. It proposes an evaluation framework to analyze potential synergies and trade-offs between these two strategic dimensions. Through an extensive literature review we identify key concepts for companies aiming to balance resilience against disruptions, and to coop with sustain ability objectives. The proposed evaluation framework highlights both synergies and trade-offs between resilience and sustainability in supply chain management. Synergies emerge through strategic concepts such as research, innovation and strategic planning. On tactical management level, synergies also emerge through risk management, multi-sourcing, process optimization and circular economy practices which enhance agility while promoting environmental responsibility. However, trade-offs persist, particularly between process redundancy and excessive resource consumption, or between inventory management and the balance between flexibility and ecological impact. To address these challenges, the integrated approach aims to help decision-makers optimize their strategies by enhancing synergies concepts and balancing trade-offs concepts that reconciles resilience to disruptions with long-term sustainability objectives.
