Analysis of Archive Formats applicability for practical use: Comparison of Compression

In this work the analysis of archive file formats for both personal use and integration as the component in informational system is performed. The detailed investigation of features of widely used archive formats on different platforms with evolution of versions is performed. The peculiarities of archive file formats and archivers based on analysis of source code and descriptions are discussed. The classification of archive formats with comparative analysis by multiple criteria with considering of availability of open source code for extraction and support of adding recovery information is proposed. The results of experimental comparison of etalon text files and synthetic non-redundant Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) file are provided. The advantages of compression ratio for ZPAQ in comparison with the rest considered archive formats for compression of text files are shown. Based on the provided results of the research it is possible to make a decision about applicability of the archive format for the use in the task.
