Comparative Study of the Effects of Generating the Network Datasets Using Multiple Geographical Information System Softwares

Software that is integrated into the Geographic Information System (GIS) has a major impact on processing and routing of spatial data. To maximize the use of GIS tools in a wide range of applications, one must have a thorough understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each tool. Through a comparison and contrast of two well-known geographic information system (GIS) software, namely ArcGIS and QGIS, the study aims to assess the results of building network datasets for the purpose of routing analysis. The creation of a network dataset and the digitalization of Ambo town using Landsat 8 imagery are the main objectives of the research. It is found that ArcGIS offers a feature-rich and intuitive UI along with strong integration possibilities. Its mild learning curve and expensive price, however, can make it less accessible to novice users. As an open-source substitute, QGIS, on the other hand, has a robust community and a plugin-based design that facilitates customization and interaction with several data sources, proving to be both flexible and affordable. The results clearly indicate that ArcGIS has a greater number of features than QGIS; however, QGIS is a more cost-effective and practical alternative that is backed by a robust community. The optimal choice will be determined by the user's requirements, the resources at their disposal, and their level of expertise.
