Comparison of the Performance of the Intel Quantum Simulator on HPC Systems

Although quantum computers are a reality, they are still in their early stages of development. Noisy qubits and limited accessibility make quantum computing simulators essential for the scientific community. Several simulators exist, but reports on their performance in concrete systems are scarce. In this work, we implemented the Intel Quantum Simulator (IQS) on the Lusitania supercomputer. We evaluated its scalability based on the number of qubits and circuit depth, comparing the results with those obtained on a personal computer. The findings show that for complex circuits, from 13 qubits onward, execution time is consistently lower on HPC systems, achieving speedups up to $99 \%$. Additionally, HPC enables the simulation of circuits that cannot run on a personal computer due to RAM limitations. Our goal is to provide the quantum research and developer community with an analysis that supports more informed decision-making regarding simulator performance.
