Distributed Process Control and Interoperability Using IEC 61499 and MQTT

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) plays a pivotal role in Industry 4.0 by enabling automation, real-time data analysis, and remote monitoring through integrated architectures. Key communication protocols for IoT include MQTT, MQTTS, AMQP, and CoAP, with MQTT being particularly suited for low-cost, energy-efficient devices due to its publish/subscribe model. The IEC 61499 standard supports distributed control systems through function blocks, ensuring interoperability and configurability essential for cyber-physical systems. This paper introduces a process control platform leveraging IEC 61499 and MQTT to demonstrate IIoT capabilities in open automation, focusing on interoperability.
