Calculation Method of Asymmetric Delay in Precision Time Protocol Network

This article examines the principle of high-precision time synchronization in communication networks using the Precision Time Protocol (PTP) and proposes a compensation method for asymmetric link delays. PTP is based on the IEEE 1588 standard and is widely used in industrial Ethernet and telecommunication networks to achieve uniform clock synchronization between devices through timestamp exchange. To address this, this paper proposes an asymmetric delay compensation scheme based on segmented measurements, in which the link is divided into several small segments and the delay of each segment is measured separately, allowing a more accurate calculation of the actual path delay. In the end-to-end mechanism, the delay between the Ordinary Clock (OC) and Boundary Clock (BC) devices is compensated by segmented measurements, and in the point-to-point mechanism, the delay between OC, Transparent Clock (TC) and BC devices is measured and compensated hop by hop, ensuring synchronization over the entire link. The experimental results show that this method significantly reduces the timing deviations caused by asymmetric paths and improves the synchronization accuracy, which technically supports the application of PTP in complex network environments.
