Design and Validation of High-Pole-Count Active Magnetic Bearings for Enhanced Performance in Rim-Driven Propulsors

This paper presents an in-depth investigation into the design of radial active magnetic bearings (AMBs) tailored specifically for Rim-Driven Propulsors (RDPs). Emphasizing the crucial role of AMBs in minimizing mechanical wear, enabling higher rotational speeds, and improving system efficiency, the study examines configurations ranging from simpler eight-pole arrangements to complex high-pole-count models (Model D). Critical performance parameters, including force-current and force-displacement coefficients, are analytically derived, validated, and rigorously analyzed through Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations. The results confirm significant performance enhancements achieved through careful optimization of pole-toslot ratios and increased pole counts. Furthermore, the paper introduces a generalized analytical formula for bearings with ’n’ poles, providing an effective tool for future design and optimization. Challenges in accurately modeling magnetic forces are addressed through FEM simulations and validations, contributing valuable insights for the development of advanced RDP systems.
