Design of Rectangular MIMO Array with Self-Decoupling Wall for Hybrid Beamforming

This paper explores Hybrid MIMO Beamforming (HMBF), a crucial technique in modern wireless communication, particularly for millimeter-wave (mm-wave) systems, as it enables high data transmission rates and efficient performance over long distances. Hybrid beamforming divides the beamforming process into analog and digital components, combining their strengths to optimize cost, power efficiency, and flexibility. However, most of the conventional HMBF analysis does not consider the electro-magnetic coupling effects both in the transmit and receive ends. This paper aims to focus on this issue where a microstrip patch with a vertical metal wall is used to reduce the E-plane coupling between the adjacent elements. Later, antenna arrays of 2 × 2 and 3 × 3 dimensions are constructed with carefully optimized spacing to ensure compactness and reduce mutual coupling. Both the port and radiation patterns of the antennas have been investigated. Later, the electromagnetic impacts have been explored through end-to-end system modeling of HMBF.
