A Methodology for Analyzing and Diagnosing Renewable Grid Tie Inverter Designs

The rapid proliferation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems is transforming the electrical power industry. Grid-Tied Inverter (GTI) systems are gaining traction due to the abundance of solar energy and advancements in power electronics. This paper explores the testing and real-time debugging of bi-directional GTI topologies, including multilevel inverters, under dynamic conditions. It addresses challenges in debugging harmonics and power quality, and methods for validating MPPT response times and synchronization. Utilizing oscilloscopes with specialized software, the study measures critical performance parameters such as MPPT efficiency, anti-islanding, and inverter efficiency. Early validation enhances confidence during compliance testing with standards like IEC and IEEE, thereby reducing costly certification iterations. The paper covers input characteristics, MPPT analysis, safety tests, output characteristics, and antiislanding analysis.
