Development of a Wireless Implantable Intracranial Pressure Monitoring System

Continuous intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring is highly valuable for the clinical treatment of patients with intracranial diseases. Wire implantable ICP monitoring is the clinical gold standard for obtaining accurate measurement results. However, long-term implantation has the risk of complications such as bleeding and infection. This paper demonstrates a wireless implantable ICP monitoring system. The implanted part of the system (Ø10 X 30 mm) consists of an encapsulated piezoresistive pressure sensor, a catheter, a protective package containing a flexible circuit board and a battery. The extracorporeal part is a wireless communication monitor. This fully integrated miniaturized battery-powered wireless ICP monitoring system, for the first time, without the need to wear external power supply coils, has potential to monitor ICP in real time over 7 days avoiding the risk of infection, as well as wider detection range (−20~ 120 mmHg), higher detection accuracy (±1.5 mmHg) and lower drift (0.5 mmHg) compared with the previous work. In-vitro and in-vivo pig tests, have fully validated the feasibility and reliability of this system.
