Geophysical Investigation Using Gpr and Fem to Detect Anthropogenic Structures in the Coastal Area of Artemis, Attica, Greece

This research presents a comprehensive geophysical survey of the coastal area of Artemis in Attica, Greece, using ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electromagnetic measurements (FEM) to identify and characterize possible anthropogenic subsurface structures. Coastal environments are highly dynamic and are shaped by complex interactions between sediment transport, erosion and human intervention. These coastal zones are important interfaces between land and sea and play a fundamental role in economic, social and ecological activities. They are highly vulnerable to both natural processes and human-induced pressures, necessitating the use of advanced methods for accurate subsurface assessment. The integrated use of GPR and FEM provided an integrated approach, unveiling significant subsurface heterogeneities and patterns indicative of anthropogenic influence, particularly in the context of revealing an old harbor connected to the existing ancient temple Results underline the importance of non-destructive geophysical techniques for analyzing coastal evolution, addressing electromagnetic signal attenuation challenges due to saline conditions, and developing sustainable management strategies. This multidisciplinary approach enhances subsurface imaging quality, informing decision-making for effective coastal resilience planning and infrastructure development.
