A Mixed-Methods Study on the Adoption of an Augmented Reality Application for Space Education

This study investigates the potential adoption of a mobile application that integrates augmented reality (AR) and social media features to enrich space education. Anchored in the Greater Manila Area, Philippines context, the platform aims to make astronomy learning more engaging, accessible, and community-centered. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study collected quantitative data from 125 respondents and qualitative insights from key informants using open-ended narrative questions. The research examined user behaviors and preferences in science learning, digital technology use, and social media interaction, while identifying perceived knowledge gaps and accessibility issues in astronomy education. Through statistical and thematic analyses, four key drivers of adoption emerged: technological preferences, social media behavior, general technology usage, and perceived shortcomings in current astronomy learning tools. Results indicate a strong interest in AR-powered astronomy applications, particularly those designed to be mobile-first, socially interactive, and user-friendly. Mobile application features such as real-time stargazing, interactive learning modules, and gamified experiences were identified as critical for maintaining user engagement and promoting sustained learning. The findings suggest a high level of readiness among users for mobile, AR-enhanced educational tools that extend learning beyond traditional classrooms. The study offers valuable insights to inform future design, development, and implementation strategies for educational technology in science learning. The study also contributes to the growing literature in space education, technology integration in education, and digital learning.
