Data-Informed Identification of Prime Sites for Tidal Energy Along the Irish Coast

Tidal stream energy, valued for its reliability and predictability, has become a major focus in renewable energy development initiatives. Within this context, Ireland, with its extensive coastline, holds opportunities for advancing tidal energy exploration and development. However, realising this potential requires identifying optimal sites with strong and consistent tidal currents. This study compiles and analyses tidal stream data to facilitate preliminary site selection for tidal energy development along the Irish coast. A database catalogue was developed, featuring 100 tidal stream datasets, each evaluated against 12 key features, including type, centre, location, spatial and temporal coverage, data format, collection period, database history, metadata, access rights, and highlighted information. This inventory serves as a foundation for purpose-driven off-site screening of candidate locations for tidal energy projects. Analysis highlights several promising tidal zones, including the North Channel, St George's Channel, and estuaries such as the Shannon Estuary, due to their strong tidal currents. The North Channel, between Northern Ireland and Scotland, exhibits peak flows exceeding 3.0 m/s, making it highly suitable for energy extraction. The St George's Channel, between Ireland and Wales, also presents significant potential, with tidal current speeds reaching 2.5 m/s. Despite Ireland's tidal energy potential, data availability and quality remain major limitations. Existing datasets are often outdated, incomplete, or restricted, hindering comprehensive site assessments. Addressing these data gaps through systematic tidal surveys, improved high-resolution modelling efforts, and enhanced data-sharing practices is crucial for advancing sustainable tidal energy development. The current data-informed approach enhances the site screening process, a vital step toward resource optimisation. Overall, this strategic approach in data consolidation and data-centric primary filtering provides a valuable tool for stakeholders. This study underscores the need for coordinated efforts to improve tidal data availability and quality, strengthening Ireland's position as a leader in marine renewable energy.
