Enhancing Second-Life Battery Deployment: Smart Solutions for Sustainable Energy Storage

The transition to electric mobility and renewable energy has significantly accelerated the demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), while simultaneously raising concerns about end-oflife battery management. This study explores the emerging role of second-life batteries (SLBs), which offer a promising avenue for extending the operational lifespan of retired LIBs through reuse, repurposing, or remanufacturing. A comprehensive examination of SLB technology is presented, including the underlying chemistry, degradation behavior, and configuration formats of LIBs. The paper further outlines the battery lifecycle and evaluates potential secondlife pathways in terms of economic viability, sustainability, and system integration. Particular emphasis is placed on identifying and addressing the technical, economic, regulatory, and environmental barriers that hinder widespread SLB deployment. These include the lack of standardized State of Health (SoH) metrics, thermal management issues, safety concerns, cost uncertainties, and fragmented recycling policies. Additionally, the need for traceability, real-time monitoring, and efficient reverse logistics is highlighted as a critical factor in scaling SLB-based energy storage solutions. By synthesizing recent advancements and research trends, the study proposes actionable strategies and future directions to enable the efficient and safe utilization of SLBs in applications such as grid support, residential storage, and microgrid systems. The findings serve as a roadmap for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders seeking to capitalize on SLBs as a bridge between sustainable mobility and energy resilience.
