Field Experimental Study on Suppressing Ice-Induced Torsional Vibration of Overhead Ground Wires Using Orthogonal Double-Pendulum Anti-Twist Devices

Ice accretion on transmission lines poses a significant threat to their safe operation. During the natural icing process, ice often accumulates unevenly on one side of the conductor, leading to torsional deformation, which in turn greatly affects the icing behavior. To address this issue, this paper proposes a method using orthogonal dual-pendulum counterweights to suppress conductor torsion during icing. Based on the self-excited galloping mechanism of transmission lines and the principle of counterweight damping, we developed a design methodology for the mass, pendulum length, and distributed installation of the counterweights. Natural icing observation experiments were conducted to analyze the torsional behavior of the conductor and evaluate the suppression performance of the proposed dual-pendulum system. Results show that the ice profile with counterweights tends to form an airfoil shape, while without counterweights, it gradually evolves into an elliptical profile. The theoretical predictions of the conductor torsion angle from the proposed model closely match the experimental measurements. Field tests confirm the effectiveness of the distributed counterweight approach in significantly reducing conductor torsion during natural ice accretion.
