Dual Band CSRR Metamaterial High Sensitive Microwave Sensor for Dielectric Detection

This paper presents the design and analysis of a microwave sensor according to coupled split-ring resonators (SRR) and metamaterials for high-sensitivity dielectric detection. The proposed structure leverages the resonant properties of metamaterials and the strong interaction between electric and magnetic fields to enable precise detection of minor variations in the dielectric constant of materials. The sensor's performance is evaluated through simulations tests for various substrates, such as FR-4, RO4003, and RO5880. Results indicate that the resonant frequency experiences shift in proportion to variations in the dielectric constant and the height of the material under test (MUT). With its high sensitivity and reliable performance, this design offers broad applications in various industries, including material identification and sensors. The sensitivity average $(\mathrm{S}_{\text{avg}})$ of this dual band sensor is 5.23% with a Quality factor of 76.5 at the frequency of 1.53 GHz. Furthermore, the sensor is compact in size, measuring $0.5 \lambda_0 \times 0.27 \lambda_0 \times 0.02 \lambda_0$, where $\lambda_0$ denotes the wavelength of the wave excitation in free space.
