Florida Current transport from cross stream voltages: 1981-9

Summary form only given. A method for measuring currents by analyzing voltage fluctuations is described. The voltages were measured using an abandoned undersea cable. The voltage fluctuations are found to accurately track the transport fluctuations of the Florida Current determined from velocity profiling data with a misfit of 0.7 Sverdrup (1 Sv=10/sup 6/ m/sup 3//s) between 133 days of transports derived from the voltages and profiling data from 9 sites about 10 km apart. The misfit is 1.4 Sv between 115 days of transport derived from the current meter mooring data and profiling data. Thus, the utility of voltage measurements from abandoned cables for monitoring transport fluctuations has been demonstrated.<>
