The Popularity Paradox: Insights into Vulnerabilities and Updates in Maven Ecosystem

In this study, we analyze the Maven Central repository to understand the factors driving dependency popularity, update patterns, and vulnerability profiles. Using Cypher Query Language on the Neo4j desktop application, we uncover insights into the frequency of updates for widely-used libraries and the nature of vulnerabilities they may harbor. We also categorize popular dependencies based on functionality to reveal developmental trends. The findings provide valuable perspectives on the relationship between dependency popularity and critical aspects such as security and maintenance, offering actionable guidance for developers. This study emphasizes the dual nature of popular libraries: they benefit from frequent updates and active maintenance but are also more likely to be targeted by malicious actors, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to dependency selection and ecosystem security.
