Alert System using Vibrotactile Technology for Hearing Impaired

It is harder for the hearing impaired to know about the sudden changes in airport announcements. The objective is to create a system that is easy to use for people with hearing impairments. It ensures quick attention to important messages from airports when they are traveling alone. With this system, they can ensure safe travel by knowing the details of their flights. As a solution to this, vibrotactile technology, a type of haptic technology, is introduced. This technology focuses on tactile communication to transmit information using vibrations, which can be applied transversely or normally to the skin surface. In this system, an app is developed through which certain information can be uploaded, and it is connected to the hardware part of the system. An API website is developed for demonstration and is used to get information on flight status. The system will show alerts depending on the flight status through both the app and display on the wrist device, and it also gives alerts through vibrations. Additionally, a name can be input by the user through the app, and the system checks that name against sounds in the surroundings. If a match occurs, the system will show a notification ‘Gate Call’ through the display, and vibration will also be activated. This system will help people with hearing impairments not to miss any important flight updates if they are traveling alone and without depending on anyone. It will provide them with a helping hand so that they can rely on this system without worrying about missing their flights.The collected feedback from hearing-impaired users in terms of functionality, reliability, and user experience was rated on a scale of 5.
