High-Gain MIMO Antenna Incorporating FSS Structure for Enhanced Isolation and Performance in Sub-6 GHz Band for 5G Applications

This research paper discusses a compact FSS based 2×2(4-port) MIMO antenna to operate in 5G applications at a band sub-6 GHz. The antenna, with compact dimensions of 93 × 93 × 1.6 mm³, is designed to operate at 5.5 GHz. An FSS layer is integrated beneath the radiating elements to enhance gain and minimize mutual coupling. The proposed MIMO configuration achieves a return loss of −25 dB, isolation better than −28 dB, and a peak gain of 8.2 dBi at the operating frequency. Simulations are performed using ANSYS HFSS to evaluate essential parameters including Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), surface currents, and MIMO diversity features such as the Envelope Correlation Coefficient (ECC) and Diversity Gain (DG). The 2×2 MIMO setup offers strong scalability, excellent efficiency, and a compact form factor, making it well-suited for integration into contemporary sub-6 GHz 5G wireless networks. The designed antenna addresses the demand for high-performance, space-efficient antennas in next-generation communication devices.
