A High Frequency Bipolar Nanosecond Pulse Generator With High Voltage Gain Based on Inductive Discharge for DBD Application

High frequency bipolar nanosecond pulse (HFBNP) generator has been proven to produce dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma with high discharge efficiency and uniformity. High voltage gain of output/input is also a key technical requirement for DBD pulse apparatus (such as biomedicine) with low-voltage dc input (lithium battery). This article proposes a new all-solid-state HFBNP generator with several thousand-folds of voltage gain to produce DBD plasma based on inductive discharging circuit with one pulse transformer using low-voltage dc charging. This article theoretically derives the proposed circuit topology to solve the voltage waveform of output pulse with time domain. The theoretical pulse waveform is qualitatively well agreement with the experimental voltage waveform. Finally, a HFBNP generator prototype is built to verify proposed circuit topology for DBD plasma application. This circuit topology could output HFBNPs with adjustable amplitude of 0-±17 kV on 30 kΩ resistive load by a 4 V dc supply, where ratio of only one pulse transformer is 1:20. The voltage gain could reach ∼4250. The rise time of output pulse is less than 300 ns. The maximum discharging frequency could reach 10 kHz. This article proposed a novel HFBNP circuit to drive DBD plasma application with high voltage gain and low input dc voltage for miniaturized apparatus.
