Resource Management for URLLC–eMBB Coexistence in Sub-Band Full-Duplex Systems

With the growing adoption of uplink (UL)-intensive services such as video conferencing, high-definition (HD) streaming, and real-time gaming, the demand for UL resources has increased significantly. Traditional time division duplexing (TDD) networks often struggle to meet these dynamic traffic demands, necessitating innovative solutions such as sub-band full-duplex (SBFD) to enhance resource utilization and network efficiency. To enable scalable and deployment-aware SBFD integration, we consider a hybrid deployment of TDD and SBFD BSs, taking into account practical constraints such as hardware cost and backward compatibility. This study proposes a resource management strategy for multicell networks that facilitates the coexistence of SBFD and TDD to effectively support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) services for both UL and downlink (DL) communication. The proposed coexistence-based approach significantly reduces delay and increases the maximum number of supportable user equipments (UEs) compared to traditional TDD-only methods. Specifically, we propose a random access-based scheme to facilitate UL URLLC UEs during the flexible SBFD slots. The proposed scheme allows short packets to opportunistically access SBFD UL subbands during flexible scheduling intervals, effectively addressing the stringent latency requirements of high-frequency URLLC transmissions. By dynamically prioritizing URLLC traffic while optimizing resources for eMBB, our strategy provides a balanced and efficient solution for managing diverse traffic demands in dynamic environments.
