Fuzzy Tuning Based V/F logic for Speed Control of Five-Phase Induction Motor Drives

With the increase in the utilization of advanced electric drives especially in high-performance industrial applications, the development of motor control techniques to enhance the performance and efficiency of electric drives has gradually become an interesting and evolving area. Owning numerous perks such as easy implementation and reliability in preserving a steady magnetic flux, guaranteeing steady and smooth speed control, Voltage-to-Frequency (V/F) control is still the most used control method. On the other hand, compared to conventional three-phase systems, five-phase induction motors are known for their smoother operation, higher torque density, fault tolerance, lower torque ripple, and reduced DC-link voltage. This study accentuates the speed control of multi-phase induction motor drives. Within the framework of V/F control logic, four control techniques are compared: proportional-integral (PI), fuzzy-tuned PI (FTPI), fractional order PI (FOPI), and fuzzy-tuned FOPI (FTFOPI). The performance of the controllers under load-changing conditions is analyzed in the study in terms of steady-state performance, robustness, and dynamic response. It is observed that the fuzzy-FOPI controller shows promising results in tackling the non-linearities and complexity of induction motor drives by utilizing the flexibility of fuzzy logic along with fractional-order dynamics. In addition to demonstrating the possibilities of sophisticated fuzzy and fractional-order controllers, this work offers Profound insights into how to use them in real-time applications for motor drive systems of the future.
