MemoryMeds: IoT and GPS based Automatic Pill Dispenser for Amnesia Care

Patients with memory loss conditions such as amnesia often forget to take their medications on time, leading to serious health complications. Existing systems either depend on wired devices, lack dynamic network support, or fail to alert caregivers in real time. This paper proposes MemoryMeds, composed of three main elements: an automated pillbox, a wireless wearable device, and a web-based application for caregivers. The pillbox dispenses the right number of drugs at the appointed times only when the patient is physically near the device so that there can be no chance of the drug being missed or taken off of schedule. While reminding patients, the wearable device provides scheduled LED light signals for discreet but effective reminders. It is GPS-enabled for indoor-outdoor patient tracking, adding an extra layer of protection. An Internet-based application allows caregivers to view the medication schedules, be notified in real time when the patient has taken pills or forgotten to take the pills, observe patient behavior, and also be notified when to reorder medications. With the help of the hybrid approach, patients become more compliant with their treatments, enjoy greater safety, and experience a much easier way of being cared for. Hence, MemoryMeds offers an intervention for chronic disease management for patients with memory disorders that is efficient, non-intrusive, and easy to use through wireless communication and advanced sensor technologies.
