Performance Analysis of Two-Wheeler Connecting Rod for Sustainable Design

In today’s world when the pollution levels in the developing countries are raising to alarming levels, it becomes imperative to reduce emissions for sustainable growth and development. In order to achieve this optimizing in design is essential for reducing emissions. Sleek yet robust design enables the machine and its components to work efficiently thereby producing fewer pollutants in the exhaust emission. This study conducts an analysis of connecting rod performance in a simulation environment created through Ansys software in order to achieve a sustainable design which adheres to the requirements of SDG 9. The novelty of the work lies in the analysis part wherein both stress and vibrations are performed simultaneously. The automotive industry is currently prioritizing weight reduction techniques, which can be achieved through the introduction of new designs, cost-effective production processes, or the implementation of alternative materials. For nearly a couple of years, since research has been going on at a fast rate, the experts have been trying to incorporate better functionalities in connecting rod, crankshaft and piston through experimentation and optimization. A significant amount of stress develops with in the IC engine, and the connecting rod is plays an essential role to maintaining the connection in between the piston and crankshaft. The vertical motion of the piston in the internal combustion engine is converted into the rotating motion of the crankshaft through the connecting rod, combustion and inertia generates high cyclic and compressive loads exert forces on the connecting rod. This leads to an effectiveness assessment of connecting rod made from various composite materials. It was discovered that stress induced in Al-MWCNTs was 42.93% less and natural frequency of vibration was around 3% more than that in E-Glass/Epoxy composite.
