Efficient Synchronous FIFO Design: A Structured Approach using ASIC Methodology

Effective data control between processing units is vital in modern digital systems, especially in high-performance computing, embedded operations, and communication networks. This study addresses the challenge of optimizing synchronous FIFO (First-In-First-Out) memory design within ASIC-based systems, where achieving high speed, low power consumption, and minimum silicon area is critical. This research proposes a structured and industry-aligned design methodology encompassing RTL design, logic synthesis, static timing analysis, and complete physical implementation using EDA tools similar as Synopsys Design Compiler and Open ROAD. The proposed FIFO architecture incorporates advanced techniques like clock gating for dynamic power reduction and effective floor planning to optimize area utilization. It achieves a 30% reduction in area, 15% lower power consumption, and an 8% improvement in timing slack compared to conventional FIFO implementations. Comprehensive Power, Performance, and Area (PPA) analysis confirms its effectiveness and readiness for large-scale ASIC deployment. The design also considers scalability and economic viability through cost analysis and modular, parameterized architecture, making it adaptable for different SoC operations. additionally, this work opens avenues for future advancements including support for multi-clock disciplines, error discovery mechanisms, and AI-driven optimization to tackle the evolving challenges in coming-generation VLSI systems.
