Pedal Assisted Bicycle with BLDC Motor

This paper presents the design and simulation of a multifunctional pedal-assist electric bicycle (pedelec) using a brushless DC (BLDC) motor to address key challenges in energy efficiency, rider fatigue, and battery optimisation. The system supports four modes: E-Bike, Pedal Assist, Regenerative Braking, and Standstill Charging. A cadence-based control strategy, combined with throttle modulation, adapts motor assistance to rider input while enabling energy recovery during braking and stationary pedalling. Simulations conducted in MATLAB Simulink demonstrate effective torque sharing, an increase in energy efficiency, responsive mode transitions, and improved battery charging during regenerative events, confirming the system's potential for enhanced urban mobility.
