Speech to Sign Language Translation Techniques - A Scoping Review

Individuals with hearing challenges confront obstructions in their interactions with individuals possessing auditory capabilities. This issue is effectively addressed by implementing speech-to-sign language translation (STSLT) solutions. Consequently, the evolution of highly efficient translation systems has been set in motion. However, the complexity of sign language and the requirement for accurate recognition of both speech and sign language gestures pose significant obstacles to developing reliable translation systems. This survey paper examines and thoroughly analyzes the current cutting-edge methodologies for STSLT. The review discusses the benefits, limitations, and possible directions for future research of several different approaches, such as rule-based, statistical, and deep learning-based paradigms. The survey culminates with a meticulous examination of the far-reaching implications of STSLT on the inclusivity and the unique communicative demands of individuals who are deaf or afflicted by hearing impairments.
