Solar Adoption to Solar Rebound Effect: Challenges to Sustainable Energy Transition

To reach its goal of having net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, India has successfully increased the proportion of renewable energy sources, especially solar energy in its energy mix. Adoption of solar energy among residential homes has increased quickly due to its advantages, which include lower bills, cleaner environment, improved health, more job opportunities, etc. However, prosumers energy usage habits have been observed to shift as its installation has increased, which is termed as solar rebound effect. After switching to solar energy, prosumers have increased their overall electricity usage, which is concerning as it undermines the advantages of solar energy adoption.
