Analysis of Artificial Intelligence on Environmental Sustainability

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is growing to be a revolutionary help in solving key environmental sustainability issues such as climate change, natural resource mobilization, and pollution management. Nonetheless, the use of AI for environmental sustainability still has a lot of challenges and obstacles to overcome. This paper highlights the most significant challenges that prevent the effective use of AI in this field, comprising data privacy and security concerns, integration into existing infrastructure, the high energy consumption of AI models, regulatory and legal obstacles, social and cultural hurdles, etc. AI systems require vast amounts of data, triggering data privacy concerns that need robust governance frameworks. This requires massive upgrades and skilled workforce in the legacy infrastructure to fill the gap in the technology. Additionally, the energy-intensive nature of sophisticated AI models contributes towards carbon emissions which can be at odds with sustainability goals. Moreover, the existence of regulatory uncertainties and inconsistent policies in different countries also hinders the adoption of AI, while social and cultural hindrances such as public mistrust and inequalities of access to technology limit worldwide implementation. This essay further discusses these issues and suggests how some of the obstacles could be removed, such as through the creation of greener AI models, adopting ethical regulations, and committing to public diplomacy to socialize crowds about the benefits of these technologies. Our results have important implications for strategic planning and coordination among relevant stakeholders in order to capitalize on the potential for AI to advance environmental sustainability.
