Remote Monitoring and Control of Distributed Energy Resources via 5G

This paper presents a 5G-enabled testbed for remote monitoring and control of distributed energy resources (DERs), using a grid-connected PV system as a case study. In this case, a closed-loop controller has been developed to dynamically regulate the output power of the PV system based on receiving measurements from a remote energy meter. The proposed testbed incorporates a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) and a monitoring and control unit (MCU) to evaluate real-time performance over a 5G network. Results demonstrate that the remote control over 5G can achieve low-latency performance with no packet loss, making it viable for DER management. This suggests the potential for scalable solutions for integrating DERs within smart grids.
