Building a Theoretical Framework Using a Multi-Theoretical Approach: A Case of Privacy Theories

This paper presents a framework for researchers seeking to employ a multi-theoretical approach in establishing theoretical underpinnings for their studies. This study identifies a significant gap in the literature: the lack of guidance on how researchers can effectively integrate a multi-theoretical approach, particularly when one theory is insufficient to fully explain complex phenomena. The primary objective is to develop a structured method for integrating multiple theories. The study also demonstrates the applicability of a multi-theoretical approach in privacy research as a secondary objective. Using a systematic literature review, this research identifies and synthesizes insights from 25 privacy theories, narrowing them down to nine that are most relevant. The findings demonstrate that a multi-theoretical approach enhances the depth and rigor of research. The potential impact of this framework extends beyond privacy studies, providing a valuable tool for researchers in various fields where complex, interdisciplinary issues require robust theoretical underpinnings.
