Copyright Issues Arising from Digital Technology in Museums: A Kenyan Case Study

This study examines copyright concerns arising from the integration of digital technology in museums, focusing on a case study in Kenya. As museums increasingly embrace digital technologies to display and preserve cultural heritage, they encounter new challenges in managing intellectual property rights. This paper explores the specific copyright issues that Kenyan museums face when digitising artefacts, collections, and exhibitions, including issues of unauthorised reproduction, cultural appropriation, and legal limitations. By analysing the current legal framework and its adequacy in addressing digital copyright concerns, this study identifies gaps and suggests policy recommendations to strengthen copyright protections within Kenyan museums. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on safeguarding cultural heritage in a digital era, with implications for museum practices in other regions facing similar challenges.
