Theoretical Modelling of Permanent Magnet Linear Eddy Current Brake Based on Equivalent Circuit

The permanent magnet linear eddy current brake (PMLECB) has attracted substantial attention owing to its noncontact operation, high braking force density, and reliability in high-speed braking scenarios. This paper conducts an in-depth investigation of PMLECBs, with a primary focus on the development of an accurate and efficient analytical model for predicting braking performance. A three-dimensional analytical model based on an equivalent circuit is proposed, which comprehensively considers the geometric characteristics of brake coils and permanent magnets, as well as the end effects and multi-degree-of-freedom motion of the primary movers. The model is verified through finite element method (FEM) simulations. The results show that the proposed model can accurately predict the braking performance, facilitating the advancement of PMLECB design and its broader implementation across braking systems of electromagnetic launch and high-speed transportation.
