Early Detection of Diabetic Foot Ulcers through Thermal Imaging Analysis: A Machine Learning Approach

The present research study introduces an innovative approach for the analysis of thermal pictures in order to identify the initial stages of foot ulcers in individuals with diabetes. Early identification and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers are crucial to minimizing the substantial health hazards they provide. Conventional techniques, most relying on visual inspection, may overlook first indications of tissue injury. By contrast, thermal imaging has the capability to identify variations in skin temperature that could potentially signify inflammation and ulceration. The proposed framework comprises three main components: image preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification. Visual preprocessing enhances the quality of images and eliminates unwanted noise, while feature extraction detects important attributes such as gradient and texture. These features are subsequently utilized to train machine learning models in order to distinguish between healthy tissue and regions that are susceptible to ulceration. The methodology is verified by utilizing a curated collection of thermal pictures obtained from individuals diagnosed with diabetes, including those who have foot ulcers. Efficacy of the model in differentiating ulcer-prone areas is demonstrated by sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy metrics. The proposed technique provides a noninvasive means of identifying and tracking foot ulcers at an early stage, hence potentially enhancing the prognosis of individuals with diabetes. Future research endeavors include the implementation of clinical studies with 95% to further substantiate this methodology. If effectively deployed, this technology has the potential to significantly decrease the occurrence of foot problems in individuals with diabetes.
