Modular Clamping Circuit for SSCBs, Operated in Cryogenic Environments

The aviation sector is entering a transformative era with the advent of zero-emission aircraft. Leveraging technologies like hydrogen fuel cells in combination with cryogenic technologies aim to reduce aviation’s environmental footprint. A key challenge lies in developing lightweight, high-power-density electronics to enhance efficiency and minimize aircraft weight. Cryogenic power electronics, offering superior power density and thermal performance, will be crucial in this effort. Reliable operation of these technologies requires advanced electrical protection, including Solid-State Circuit Breakers (SSCBs) and clamping circuits. This paper investigates an innovative clamping circuit optimized for high-speed SSCBs, focusing on its adaptation to cryogenic conditions. The proposed design effectively manages overvoltage, ensuring minimal overshoot and fast fault clearing. Its stand-alone, analog design makes it ideal for applications where active digital control is undesirable. By extending the focus to cryogenic environments, this study highlights its potential to enhance stability and safety in zero-emission aircraft.
