Novel Rectifier Technology for Power Efficiency Improvement of Telecommunications Base Stations

The exponential surge in Information Technology (IT) development is driving demand for mobile communication technologies that offer improved access speeds and greater reliability. This does not guarantee the possibility of complete swap of older technologies such as 2G with 4G, 5G and beyond, but demands volumes and densities of transmission devices, and thus pressurises the telecommunication operators to have multiple circuits powered up in the base stations. Whilst multi-power source models have developed to cater the localised power demand for base stations, it does not discount the need for efficiency improvements in power conversion. This paper discusses a novel approach for the power rectification combining the 24-pulse approach with the toroidal transformer technology and Wide Bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices, which will improve the rectifier efficiency, improve reliability and reduce total cost of ownership for telecommunication base stations leading to significant economic benefits and environmental sustainability. The telecommunication operators can adopt the proprietary DCTHR solution without needing to change the existing infrastructure.
