A MATLAB-Based Solver for Modeling Neurons

We present a Matlab-based cable solver that can be used in place of the existing NEURON platform. The Matlab-based solver provides a transparent alternative to the NEURON solvers that developers can easily modify and integrate for modeling complex scenarios without the need to conform to the NEURON format. We benchmark our solver by modeling a neuron consisting of morphologically distinct components and ion channels inhomogeneously distributed across the neuron membrane regulating its excitability through different mechanisms. We present results on a realistic rat L2/3 pyramidal neuron model and show their agreement with the NEURON solver.
