The AI-enhanced DIY robotic car: introducing the five big ideas of AI

This chapter presents the “DIY robotic car that can be controlled using voice commands” project, developed within the framework of the AI4STEM Erasmus+ project. The project is a learning intervention designed to introduce teachers and students aged 12-16, to the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of things (IoT) through the lens of the five big ideas, project-based learning pedagogies, and robotics. The project is divided into five activities. Each activity is accompanied by educational material, including teacher guidelines, student worksheets, and half-baked solutions, aiming to facilitate its implementation in the classroom. The project was piloted in a small-scale workshop by experienced STEM teachers and is currently being piloted with students from a junior high school, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of using this approach for the introduction of AI and IoT in secondary education.
