Digital Decoder from 4-Bit Binary Code to 7-Segment LED Display

Within a digital system the information is represented by means of binary digits, also known as “bits”, and most frequently they have the meaning of numbers. In order to show the value of a binary number, it is useful to divide them into groups of four, also known as”tetrads”, and then each of these groups can be easily converted into a hexadecimal digit. Thus, a converter from four bits to one 7 -segment LED display would be a useful tool for monitoring, debugging, supervising etc. This paper presents a digital decoder for 4-bit binary words to one hexadecimal digit, using an EEPROM and a 7 -segment LED display, which can display the value of one tetrad into three different modes, can perform the lamp test and can drive both common-cathode and common-anode LED displays.
