Research on Business Models and Development Prospects of User-Side Energy Storage in the Context of Market Environment

Energy storage in the power system can revolutionize traditional energy supply and consumption patterns. It plays a crucial role in facilitating the construction of a new power system and guaranteeing green, low-carbon, and secure energy supply. In the past two years, new energy storage in China has experienced explosive growth, with its installed capacity surpassing that of pumped-storage power stations. As peak-valley price differences widen across regions and new energy fully enters the market, the development of user-side energy storage will be further propelled. Thus, clarifying its business models, economic viability, and future development prospects is essential. This paper centers on researching the business models and prospects of user-side energy storage in the market context. Initially, it elaborates on the development of energy storage in China and the policy environment influencing it. Then, taking into account multiple revenue streams like peak-valley price differences, participation in the power market, coupling with distributed photovoltaics, and involvement in demand response, it explores and analyzes typical business models and formulates an economic analysis model. Lastly, considering the configuration inclination of user-side energy storage under different business models, a prediction model for its development scale is put forward to evaluate the development prospects of user-side energy storage in China.
